2/208 — "Enter into peace, all of you"
سِلْم — root س-ل-م: to be sound, wholeness, submission, peace. The word is open both to the reading "peace" and to the reading "submission", and both are transmitted in the classical commentaries; I impose no preference.
كَآفَّةً — "wholly, all of you together". The root of the word is connected with ك-ف-ف (kaff, the palm of the hand, gathering in and holding the edge of a thing): leaving no piece out at the edge.
Two readings follow from this, and both are transmitted: the whole of those entering (let everyone enter) or the whole of what is entered (let it be entered wholly).
خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰن — "the footsteps of Satan". This expression comes for the second time in the sūra (it had occurred at verse 168), and what was recorded there holds here too: the word is not "leap" but "step". A road is covered not by a single decision but by small steps following one another.
