إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْهِ شَىْءٌ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ · هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُصَوِّرُكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْحَامِ كَيْفَ يَشَآءُ
Inna'llāha lā yakhfā ʿalayhi shayʾun fi'l-arḍi wa lā fi's-samāʾ · Huwa'lladhī yuṣawwirukum fi'l-arḥāmi kayfa yashāʾ
"Truly from God nothing on earth or in heaven is hidden. · He it is who shapes you in the wombs as He wills."
The Qurʾān's usual order is al-samāwāt wa'l-arḍ — heaven first. Here it is reversed: fi'l-arḍi wa lā fi's-samāʾ.
I record this as an observation about the word order, and I build no firm ruling on it. In the classical commentaries it is said that this is connected with the following verse: the sixth verse speaks of the womb — that is, of the most hidden place on earth.
I record this as my own reading, and it is not binding: the order appears to be built on the degree of hiddenness. What is in heaven is far but visible; what is on earth is near but covered. And the verse puts the covered one first.
The root ص-و-ر: to give a thing its form, to draw a shape. Ṣūra — form. Form II (taṣwīr) conveys repetition and fineness of work.
The root was treated at 59/24 in al-Ḥashr (al-Bāriʾu'l-Muṣawwir) and at 64/3 in al-Taghābun. I do not repeat it here.
The caveat here is worth recording: kayfa yashāʾ — "as He wills". That is, the verse takes as its subject not the source of the form but the disposal of it.
And its position matters — I give this as my own reading: at the thirty-fifth verse the sūra will enter an account that opens with a woman vowing what is in her womb, and that woman will give birth to other than what she expected. The sixth verse thus lays down the ruling of that account forty verses in advance: the form in the womb is not in the hands of the one who wants it.
I record explicitly that this is not being read as a "scientific sign". The verse is not describing embryology; it is saying in whose hands the disposal lies.
