al-Raḥmān 55:46-77 — Two pairs of gardens

The last thirty-two verses of the sūra are on a single subject and have a structure of their own; I therefore take them up in a separate section.

The structure is this: two separate pairs of gardens are described.

• The first pair opens at the forty-sixth verse: وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ — "And for him who fears the station of his Lord there are two gardens."
• The second pair opens at the sixty-second verse: وَمِن دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ — "And beyond those two there are two further gardens."

In all, then, four gardens, in two pairs.
