al-Aʿrāf 7:14-15

The Qurʾān · Sūra 7: al-Aʿrāf · verses 14-15

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

7/14-15

قَالَ أَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ · قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ

Qāla anẓirnī ilā yawmi yubʿathūn · Qāla innaka mina'l-munẓarīn

"He said: 'Give me respite until the day they are raised.' · He said: 'You are among those given respite.'"

The root ن-ظ-ر and inẓār

The primary sense of the root is "to look"; in Form IV (anẓara) it means "to grant someone a span of looking", that is, to give a reprieve. The three occurrences of the root were tabulated at 38/79-80 in Ṣād (Ṣād 38/15, 79, 80). I rely on that treatment.

The limit of the respite given — three sūras, two expressions

This is a difference that must be recorded, and it was tabulated as a disagreement in Ṣād. Here I only repeat the datum:

SūraWhat Iblīs askedThe answer given
al-Aʿrāf 7/14-15Ilā yawmi yubʿathūnInnaka mina'l-munẓarīn — the limit is not stated
al-Ḥijr 15/36-38Ilā yawmi yubʿathūnInnaka mina'l-munẓarīnilā yawmi'l-waqti'l-maʿlūm
Ṣād 38/79-81Ilā yawmi yubʿathūnInnaka mina'l-munẓarīnilā yawmi'l-waqti'l-maʿlūm

Al-Aʿrāf does not give the note (ilā yawmi'l-waqti'l-maʿlūm) found in the other two sūras. This is a countable absence, and the disagreement "are the two expressions the same" was tabulated in Ṣād; I do not impose a preference.

I record this as an observation: the answer does not say "as much as you asked", it says "you are among those given respite". The request contains a date; the answer contents itself with including him in a group. And al-Aʿrāf, by not naming here the limit the other two sūras set, keeps this indefiniteness of the answer.
