"God has turned in acceptance to the Prophet, to the emigrants and to the helpers, in the hour of hardship… And to the three who were left behind: until the earth, for all its breadth, closed in on them, and their own souls closed in on them."
| Subject | Expression |
|---|---|
| al-Arḍ | Ḍāqat ʿalayhimu'l-arḍu bimā raḥubat — for all its breadth |
| Anfusuhum | Wa ḍāqat ʿalayhim anfusuhum — themselves upon themselves |
I record this as my own reading, and its ground is the qualification bimā raḥubat: the first closing-in is not a real narrowness — the earth is wide. What narrows is the person's relation to the earth. And the second clause carries this inward: the person's relation to himself.
And in al-Zumar 39/10, al-ʿAnkabūt 29/56 and al-Nisāʾ 4/97 the breadth of the earth (arḍu'llāhi wāsiʿa) was treated as a possibility of escape. In al-Tawba the same breadth becomes the measure of a state in which no escape is left. The two uses can be compared, and this is an opposition verifiable across sūras.
They understood that there is no refuge from God except to Him."
The construction of the sentence must be recorded: lā maljaʾa mina'llāhi illā ilayh — the one fled from and the one taken refuge in are the same.
ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوٓا۟ — and the order is worth recording: the acceptance is named before the turning back. Tāba ʿalayhim li-yatūbū — "He turned to them in acceptance so that they might turn back." I record this as an observation about the structure.
Per the method (Method): the event related in the background of this verse is transmitted in detail in the classical sources. In this commentary no personal name is given and no report is conveyed; what the verse itself supplies as a frame is enough.
