al-Tawba 9:88-89

The Qurʾān · Sūra 9: al-Tawba · verses 88-89

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

9/88-89

لَٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ

Lākini'l-rasūlu wa'lladhīna āmanū maʿahū jāhadū bi-amwālihim wa anfusihim; wa ulāʾika lahumu'l-khayrāt; wa ulāʾika humu'l-mufliḥūn · Aʿadda'llāhu lahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtiha'l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā; dhālika'l-fawzu'l-ʿaẓīm

"But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. All good things are theirs; it is they who prosper. · God has prepared for them gardens with rivers running beneath them, abiding in them. That is the great attainment."

لَٰكِنِ

The particle of correction (istidrāk): "but." The verse is set directly opposite the preceding block.

I record this as an observation about the structure: the sūra closes each block of negative description with a counter-description. The same structure was present at 67-71 (the hypocrites / the believers). The same thing is repeated here at 86-88. This is a weave verifiable within the sūra.

And lahumu'l-khayrāt must be recorded: khayrāt — the plural of khayr; not one determinate thing but the whole of good things.
