2/114 — Barring a place of worship
"Who is more unjust than one who bars God's name from being remembered in God's places of worship and strives for their ruin?"
The verse attaches its heaviest adjective (aẓlam — "more unjust") to a single act: barring God from being remembered in a place of worship.
What must be noticed is that the expression is general. The text does not say "your places of worship"; it says "God's places of worship". In the classical commentaries it is said that this verse points to particular historical events — the destruction of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, or the Meccans' keeping the Muslims from the Kaʿba; but the wording of the ruling has not been confined to these.
سَعَىٰ فِى خَرَابِهَآ — "strove for their ruin". The verb states effort: the destruction here is not an incidental outcome but a targeted work.
