46/19-20

وَلِكُلٍّ دَرَجَٰتٌ مِّمَّا عَمِلُوا۟ · أَذْهَبْتُمْ طَيِّبَٰتِكُمْ فِى حَيَاتِكُمُ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِهَا

"For everyone there are degrees according to what they did… In your life of this world you used up all your good things and took your enjoyment of them."

أَذْهَبْتُمْ طَيِّبَٰتِكُمْ

The construction of the sentence must be recorded: ṭayyibātikum — "your good things". That is, it is granted that they were given; it is not said that they were taken unjustly.

The reproach is directed not at their having been taken but at their having been used up. The verb is adhhabaForm IV: to take away, to bring to an end.

I record this as my own reading, and its support is the choice of words: the verse does not forbid the good things of this world; it speaks of the whole of the portion having been spent in one place. The same measure was set up in al-Baqara 2/200-202 by way of two prayers — there too it was said that the one who asks only for this world has no portion left in the hereafter. The two verses meet at the same point.

بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمْ تَفْسُقُونَ — the ground is tied to two verbs: growing proud and stepping outside the bounds. The same root had occurred in the tenth verse (wa'stakbartum). The second block closes with the diagnosis laid down in the first block.
