al-Qamar 54:30

The Qurʾān · Sūra 54: al-Qamar · verse 30

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

54/30

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

Fa-kayfa kāna ʿadhābī wa nudhur

The question that comes before the answer

This is the most striking placement I recorded in the table of refrains above, and I take it up separately here.

The order is this:

`` 29 فنادوا صاحبهم فتعاطى فعقر ← THE OFFENCE 30 فكيف كان عذابي ونذر ← THE QUESTION 31 إنا أرسلنا عليهم صيحة واحدة ... ← THE ANSWER 32 ولقد يسرنا القرآن للذكر ... ← THE REMEMBRANCE REFRAIN ``

In the other three accounts the refrain comes after the description of the punishment. Here it comes in between.

The result is this: the reader hears the question "how was the punishment" before he learns what the punishment was. The question opens a gap; verse thirty-one fills it.

I record this as my own reading: this placement increases the force of verse thirty-one. An answer that has been asked for is heard more loudly than one that has not. And the account of Thamūd is the longest account of the sūra; the punishment of the longest account is given as the answer to a question that was asked.

This is a statement about a choice; the verse numbers can be verified.
