al-Tawba 9:84-85

The Qurʾān · Sūra 9: al-Tawba · verses 84-85

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

9/84-85

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦ

Wa lā tuṣalli ʿalā aḥadin minhum māta abadan wa lā taqum ʿalā qabrih; innahum kafarū bi'llāhi wa rasūlihī wa mātū wa hum fāsiqūn · Wa lā tuʿjibka amwāluhum wa awlāduhum; innamā yurīdu'llāhu an yuʿadhdhibahum bihā fi'l-dunyā wa tazhaqa anfusuhum wa hum kāfirūn

"And never pray over any of them who dies, and do not stand at his grave. For they rejected God and His Messenger, and died having gone out of the way. · Let their wealth and their children not draw your admiration…"

The subject of the ruling

What is to be recorded per the method (Method) is this: the ground of the verse is given openly, and it is not an identity but a state: innahum kafarū … wa mātū wa hum fāsiqūnthe state at the moment of death.

I record this as my own reading, and its ground is the clause of grounds: the ruling is tied not to a group but to persons who died in a determinate state. And no general ruling is drawn from this in this commentary. No legal ruling is issued.

And two verbs must be recorded: lā tuṣalli (do not pray) and lā taqum ʿalā qabrih (do not stand at his grave). Both are verbs of participation.

The repetition of verses 55 and 85

The two verses are almost identical, and the difference lies in a single word:

VerseExpressionDifference
55Fa-lā tuʿjibka amwāluhum wa lā awlāduhumJoined with fāʾ; repeated
85Wa lā tuʿjibka amwāluhum wa awlāduhumJoined with wāw; a single

And one further difference: verse 55 has fi'l-ḥayāti'l-dunyā, verse 85 fi'l-dunyā.

I record this repetition as a datum of the text. And I add this as my own reading: the repetition of the same sentence thirty verses apart shows that this part of the sūra carries a turning point — the first occurrence after the non-acceptance of spending, the second after the ruling on the funeral.
