2/199 — "Press on from where the people press on"
According to what is transmitted, a group counted themselves privileged and would not stand where the crowd stood, but waited in a separate place. The verse removes this distinction.
And the manner of the removal is striking: no prohibition is laid down, no identity is touched; it is only said "press on from where the people press on". And the word used is ٱلنَّاس — that is, not lineage, not tribe, not rank: people.
It fits the general line of the sūra: at verse 62 the return was attached to an attribute rather than to a community's name, at verse 177 goodness was defined as conduct rather than direction, and here a claim of privilege in worship is removed.
