28/57-60 — "If we follow the guidance together with you, we shall be snatched away from our land"
Wa qālū in nattabiʿi'l-hudā maʿaka nutakhaṭṭaf min arḍinā · A-wa-lam numakkin lahum ḥaraman āminan yujbā ilayhi thamarātu kulli shayʾ
"'If we follow the guidance with you, we shall be snatched away from our land,' they said. Have We not settled them in a safe sanctuary to which the fruits of all things are gathered?"
The same root (خ-ط-ف) and the same proof were treated at al-ʿAnkabūt 29/67. The two verses can be set side by side, and the relation between them is worth recording:
| Place | Expression | Who is snatched away |
|---|---|---|
| al-ʿAnkabūt 29/67 | Wa yutakhaṭṭafu'n-nāsu min ḥawlihim | Those around them — they themselves are safe |
| al-Qaṣaṣ 28/57 | Nutakhaṭṭaf min arḍinā | They themselves — the thing they fear |
The same verb: in the one a fact that has come about, in the other a possibility that is feared. This is an overlap that can be verified from the text.
I record this as my own reading: the objection is built not upon belief but upon a concern for security — and the answer is given on the same plane: who established the place in which you are already safe? That is, protection is tied back to the source of the very thing that would be given up for the sake of protection.
وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ مُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يَبْعَثَ فِىٓ أُمِّهَا رَسُولًا (59) — the condition of destruction: that a warner has been sent.
The same principle had been recorded at Fāṭir 35/24 (wa in min ummatin illā khalā fīhā nadhīr). The two sūras state the same principle from two directions: the one that a warner has been sent, the other that there is no destruction until one is sent.
(60) — and the block closes with a sentence that sets the measure back in its place.
