al-Aḥzāb 33:73

The Qurʾān · Sūra 33: al-Aḥzāb · verse 73

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

33/73

لِّيُعَذِّبَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقَٰتِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَٱلْمُشْرِكَٰتِ وَيَتُوبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا

Li-yuʿadhdhiba'llāhu'l-munāfiqīna wa'l-munāfiqāti wa'l-mushrikīna wa'l-mushrikāti wa yatūba'llāhu ʿala'l-muʾminīna wa'l-muʾmināt, wa kāna'llāhu ghafūran raḥīmā

"This is so that God may punish the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women, the mushrik men and the mushrik women, and turn in forgiveness to the believing men and the believing women. God is Forgiving, Merciful."

The outcome of the trust

The verse is attached to the seventy-second by li- (the lām of causation): "so that…". That is, the outcome of the trust's being taken up.

And the outcome has two poles: punishment and the acceptance of repentance.

This sets a limit to the debate in the seventy-second verse, and it was recorded there: the outcome of taking up the trust is not one-directional.

Three pairs, six words

And the word order of the verse must be recorded: three groups, all with the man-woman pair.

GroupMenWomenOutcome
1al-munāfiqīnal-munāfiqātPunishment
2al-mushrikīnal-mushrikātPunishment
3al-muʾminīnal-muʾminātThe acceptance of repentance

And this closes a ring with the thirty-fifth verse of the sūra.

The sūra uses the man-woman pair in four places: 35 (attributes), 36 (obligation), 58 (those injured), 73 (outcomes). All four open the extent explicitly to both sides.

I record this as a datum of the text.

The order of the outcomes

And there is a point of word order: the verse enumerates the two negative groups first and the positive group afterwards. And it ends with the acceptance of repentance.

This is a repetition of the pattern recorded at al-Fatḥ: the Qurʾān often closes its hard sections with a statement of forgiveness.

And in this sūra the same verse-ending comes for the fifth time: ghafūran raḥīmā (5, 24, 50, 59 and 73 — five times).

يَتُوبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى — the direction of the pattern

The root ت-و-ب: to turn. Tawba — a turning.

And the interesting side of the pattern is this: in Arabic tāba ʿala'l-ʿabd (God accepted the servant's repentance) and tāba'l-ʿabdu ila'llāh (the servant turned to God) — the same verb, and when the particle changes the direction changes.

Here the particle is ʿalā: yatūba'llāhu ʿala'l-muʾminīn — that is, the subject of the verb is God.

And this completes the word order of the verse: for two groups a verb of punishment (yuʿadhdhiba), for the third a verb of turning (yatūba). Both verbs have the same subject.

On the close of the sūra

And the last words of the sūra set up a link with its first verse.

The sūra had begun with ittaqi'llāh — a search for protection. And it ends with ghafūran raḥīmā — a statement of forgiveness.

That is, the sūra opens with the search for protection and closes with the source of protection.

I record this as my own reading; its ground is the word choices of the first and the last verse.
