al-Anʿām 6:116

The Qurʾān · Sūra 6: al-Anʿām · verse 116

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

6/116

"If you obey most of those on the earth, they will lead you astray from the way of God. They follow nothing but conjecture."

The measure must be recorded: akthara man fi'l-arḍ — the majority.

I record this as an observation: the verse openly rejects the majority as a measure. And its ground is tied to knowledge: in yattabiʿūna illa'l-ẓann.

The root ظ-ن-ن was the whole axis of al-Jāthiya (45/24, 45/32) and at Fuṣṣilat 41/23 it was treated that conjecture is a cause of ruin, and the same ruling at Yūnus 10/36 (inna'l-ẓanna lā yughnī mina'l-ḥaqqi shayʾā). I rely on that treatment.
