al-Anʿām 6:84-90

The Qurʾān · Sūra 6: al-Anʿām · verses 84-90

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

6/84-90

"And We granted him Isaac (Isḥāq) and Jacob (Yaʿqūb); each We guidedThose are the ones God has guided; so follow their guidance."

Eighteen names

The block gives a list of prophets, and the function of the list must be recorded.

Abraham's reasoning (74-83) had closed with wa tilka ḥujjatunā. And immediately afterwards those who walk in the same line are counted.

I record this as my own reading, and its ground is verse 90: fa-bi-hudāhumu'qtadih"follow their guidance." That is, the list is given not as a chain of descent but as a line to be followed. And the same line was treated at al-Aḥqāf 46/9 (mā kuntu bidʿan mina'l-rusul).

(90) — the refusal to ask for a wage was treated at al-Furqān 25/57 and al-Shūrā 42/23; I rely on that treatment.

And there is a detail in the list worth recording: wa min ābāʾihim wa dhurriyyātihim wa ikhwānihim (87) — fathers, offspring and brothers are named separately; that is, the list is not presented as a closed set.
