يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن تَتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا
The root ف-ر-ق and the word furqān were analysed in al-Furqān 25/1 on the occasion of the sūra's name: that which separates, that which makes one discern. And it was recorded there that the fuʿlān pattern is a noun that states an activity. I do not repeat it here.
| Place | What furqān is |
|---|---|
| al-Furqān 25/1 | The Book that is sent down |
| al-Anfāl 8/29 | A power of discernment given as the return for guarding oneself |
The two usages put the same word in two different places: one is a text that comes from outside, the other a discernment that forms within. I record this as my own reading.
And the structure of the conditional sentence is worth recording: in tattaqū — the power of discernment is attached not to knowledge but to guarding oneself.
